Data Driven Precision Agriculture

Services and Skill Acquisition

WIDESPREAD-05-2017 – Twinning

DRAGON aims to overcome one of the main challenges in precision agriculture (PA) – low rate of adoption of PA technologies and practices, especially concerning the “big data in agriculture”.

Dragon Solution:

Specific objectives of the project are:

To enhance the long-term scientific & technological capacity of BioSense researchers to perform analyses of multiscale multisource data comprising

1) Satellite & Mobile phone-generated data

2) IoT-generated data

3) Phenomics

4) Genomics

5) Meta-genomics;

To perform training and nurturing of young researchers to develop their career in data-driven PA and promotion of opportunities for further career development within BioSense and partner institutions – Wageningen University (the Netherlands) and Agri-EPI Centre (UK)

To enable data-driven PA eco-system development by providing resources to be accessed through agricultural knowledge and information systems.

To enhance BioSense researchers’ capability to communicate high-tech knowledge and related legislative matters in the PA sector to various stakeholders and non-scientific local community in order to achieve better dissemination/diffusion and subsequent adoption of the PA innovative data-driven solutions

Project objectives will be realised through the implementation of five work packages:

1: Project management

2: Enhancing BIOS S&T expertise in PA

3: Enhancing BIOS COMMunication expertise in PA

4: Dissemination & outreach

5: Ethics requirements

DRAGON ML Hackathon: Plant your code finished successfully

November 25-27th, 2021

The BioSense Institute organized an online hackathon lasting 48 hours, for 8 teams i.e. 22 competitors, with the aim of applying machine learning in modern agriculture through work on crop classification using satellite and other data. Using Jupyter hub and Kaggle, we followed the work of the teams, who had the opportunity to work directly with mentors, young researchers from the DRAGON project. The three winning teams are Jovini zmajići, Plant power and PMF Geoinformatika. Congratulations!

ONLINE WORKSHOP ON METAGENOMICS FOR SOIL HEALTH

November 15th, 2021

The BioSense Institute and the AgriEPI Center organized a workshop “Metagenomics for Soil Health”. The workshop took two days and consisted out of two parts. The first part included presentations by lecturers from the AgriEPI Center on the basics of agricultural soil as well as on presenting first-hand experience of a farmer in the analysis of land on the farm. Also, senior researchers from BioSense Institute presented their case studies on champignon production in the light of smart agriculture and provided insight into the applied methodologies for studying the soil microbiome. Further, young researchers from the DRAGON project were given tasks related to bioinformatics data processing on metabarcoding sequences of DNA samples of compost and casing soil, collected from the mushroom producer – the company Ekofungi from Serbia, where DRAGON researchers earlier had the Residency program, to assess the microbiome community and detect the presence of pathogenic fungi, as well as testing hyperspectral imaging as a technology for early assessment of pathogenic fungi in cover samples.

Infoday for farmers on virtual Agricultural Fair in Novi Sad

Dec 14-23 2020

We took part in this year’s online Agricultural Fair, where our young researchers from the BioSense Institute, Center for Information Technologies, working on the DRAGON project, presented their results on December 18th, 2020. Info-day for farmers covered topics on early prediction on wheat yield by Zeljana Grbovic, Monitoring and mapping of crops by Dragana Blagojevic and Using satellites and radars in modern agriculture by Branislav Pejak.

Online webinar “Shout it from the rooftops: how to get your research story heard”

Nov 26 2020

organized by the Agri-EPI Center from Scotland, with the aim to foster knowledge exchange between young researchers from the BioSense Institute and experts in the field: Dr. Michelle Wilson form the SEFARI Gateway, and Jane Smirnecki from the Agri-EPI Center.
